In the summer of 1950, a cottage fire in Stevenson spurred area residents to purchase an engine and form their own fire department.
A wood and cinder-block building designed by Newtown architect Harold Smith was built and a 1930s vintage American LaFrance pumper was bought from the Bridgeport Fire Department. The Stevenson Volunteer Fire Co. grew from there, adding trucks to its apparatus. In 1964, it became the first fire company in Fairfield County to establish a Junior Volunteer Firefighters Corp.
