The Port Jefferson Fire Department is responsible for the fire safety and emergency rescue operations of the Village of Port Jefferson and the Village of Belle Terre. The area they protect encompasses about 4 square miles and almost 9,000 individuals. Besides area residences they also service the National Grid Power Station, the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry Co., 2 hospitals, 4 schools, health-care facilities, a LIRR station, a very popular harbor, beach and wetland area that hosts a large number of recreational and commercial marine vessels, tourists and many other facilities and businesses.
In addition to five companies the Port Jefferson Fire Department also has a ladies auxiliary and a junior fire department.
