The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as CAL FIRE, is administered by the State of California. Established in 1905, the department is responsible for the protection and stewardship of more than 30 million acres of privately owned wild land in the state. It also provides various types of emergency services in over 35 counties through contracts with local governments. The department responds to nearly 5,500 wild land fires annually. It provides fire prevention and safety education services throughout the state in partnerships with communities, private industries and government agencies through the CAL FIRE Volunteers in Prevention program. In addition, the department offers medical aid and responds to floods, earthquakes, train wrecks, civil disturbances and hazardous material spills.
