Its field operation division responds to more than 90,000 people spanning over 60 square miles. The department s patrol unit assists the local and civic groups in planning and executing strategies for air shows and other state festivals. The Redding Police Department s defensive tactics unit is responsible for training all sworn police personnel in tactics of arrest, self-defense, control holds and impact weapons. The department maintains a major crime unit that investigates homicides, robberies, kidnappings and aggravated assaults. The department also operates a crime prevention unit that serves as a liaison between the police department and the community and functions as a training unit for private and public groups or individuals.
