North Plains Electric Cooperative is a nonprofit corporation chartered by the State of Texas which provides electricity and allied services to counties including Hansford, Hemphill, Hutchinson, Lipscomb, Ochiltree, Roberts and Wheeler. Established in 1944, the group is owned by the consumer members and was formed with a purpose of providing affordable electricity to farmers and ranchers in the region. Between 1955 and 1960, the discovery of oil in Ochiltree and Hansford Counties and the growth of cattle feeding industries helped the cooperative to flourish. Presently, North Plains Electric Cooperative maintains over 3,400 miles of line and serves over 5,000 meters. In addition, the cooperative also provides products and services for electric irrigation, security lights and surge protection to its members.
