The Housing Authority of the City of Charleston, founded in 1935, provides admission, maintenance, property management, administrative and resident services. It is governed by the commissioners selected by the mayor and the city council and has a professional staff of more than 100 personnel. The authority serves more than 1,300 public housing households and over 1,300 Section 8 participants that live in private accommodations. The authority operates the Housing Finance Agency, which provides fund loans to low- and moderate-income citizens.
