The York Electric Cooperative is a private, nonprofit electric distribution utility that maintains a staff of more than 100 employees. It is affiliated with The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. The cooperative offers surge guard, which guards against accidents involving utility poles, lightning storms and other disturbances. It also offers operation round-up program, which provides financial assistance to members of the community who have suffered a catastrophic event. The cooperative provides a range of additional services, including decorative security lighting, capital credits and underground lines. The York Electric Cooperative has been operational for more than 65 years and maintains a location in York, S.C.
