Rutherford Electric Membership Corporation serves more than 57,000 members. It owns and maintains 6,400 miles of electric transmission line and has total assets of more than $164 million in its 10-county service area of the southwestern Piedmont of North Carolina. It is an electric cooperative that began offering electric service to its members in 1938. Electric cooperatives are private independent electric utility businesses incorporated under the laws of the states in which they operate. They were established to provide at-cost electric service to their members and are owned by the consumers they serve. They are governed by a board of directors elected from the membership, which sets policies and procedures that are implemented by the cooperatives professional staff.
