The Wopanaak Language Reclamation Project (WLRP) is a collaborative effort between the Mashpee, Aquinnah, Assonet Herring Pond Wampanoag communities in Mashpee, Town of, MA. Their mission is to revive and preserve the ancestral language of the Wampanoag people, which had been dormant for over 150 years. Through community classes, language resources, and the translation of historical documents, the WLRP is bringing back the sacred privilege and right of the tribes' language.
Founded by Jessie 'little doe' baird, who received a sacred message in her dreams, the WLRP aims to reclaim the Wampanoag language and honor the circle of faces she saw, representing her ancestors. The existence of historical documents, such as the Wopanaak Bible translated by John Eliot in 1663, has been instrumental in the reclamation efforts. With the support of the community, the WLRP is dedicated to bringing back the language one student at a time.
