The Wopanaak Language Reclamation Project (WLRP) is a collaborative effort by the Mashpee, Aquinnah, Assonet Herring Pond Wampanoag communities in Mashpee, MA. Their mission is to revive and preserve the ancestral language of the Wampanoag people, which had been dormant for over 150 years. Through community classes, resources, and the translation of historical documents, the WLRP is bringing back the sacred privilege and right of the tribes' language.
Founded by Jessie 'little doe' baird, who received a sacred message in her dreams, the WLRP aims to restore the Wampanoag language, as evidenced by the existence of a translated Bible and other legal documents written in Wopanaak by John Eliot in 1663. With a focus on language reclamation, the WLRP is dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage and identity of the Wampanoag people.
