The Melrose Canine Control Officer, currently Diane Kurkjian, can be more accurately described as the city's animal control officer, enforcing city ordinances such as leash laws, dealing with hurt, lost or loose pets and dog bites. The officer can also direct residents to the appropriate agencies in the case of wild animals on private property.
The canine control office is located in the Melrose Health Department on the basement level of City Hall.
