Founded in 1877, the Illinois State Bar Association is one of the largest voluntary organizations of lawyers in Illinois. The association provides professional services to more than 30,000 members, and educational and informational services to the public about the judiciary and legal profession. It is a private, nonprofit corporation that was formed when over 85 lawyers from nearly35 counties in Illinois met in the Sangamon County Courthouse. The Illinois State Bar Association addresses issues, such like the unauthorized practice of law and support offers legal services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Its charitable and educational arm is known as the Illinois Bar Foundation.
