Rebuilding Together is a national organization dedicated to making good homes for people who truly need them. The idea started with a team in Midland, Texas in 1973 who reconstructed one neighbor's down-trodden home. In 1988 the national office in Washington, D.C. founded Rebuilding Together under the name, "Christmas in April." Now the organization has over 255 branches and rebuilds houses year-round. The Atlanta program focuses on Fulton county low-income, disabled and elderly residents. Renovations include home repairs, roof installation and handicap access additions. The team also refurbishes abandoned homes for the homeless. Atlanta Executive Director Jan Jordan says, "If a house is boarded up, we put a tenant in there." Projects are directly supported by volunteer workers, neighborhood leaders and corporate funds.
