The Atlanta Day Shelter is a refugue and support system for homeless women and children. The building and its administrators provide a safe, welcoming and professional environment. The shelter began in Atlanta in 1894 at a time when there were only night shelters and the only day shelters were for men. There is no residency in this shelter. Administrators keep a record of who is visiting and offer many programs to help the women become self-reliant. Through the Job Readiness Program, professional counselors, help from volunteers and corporate funding, most women gain a job that pays higher than minimum wage. The shelter has been at its current location since opening in 1984 and there is still room to serve more families in need.
