Tacachale is operated by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, which is administered by the state government of Florida. Established in 1921, Tacachale is one of the oldest and largest residential communities for the developmentally disabled in Florida. It serves more than 450 adult men and women in over 30 homes. The community also serves medically complex persons and patients with mental illnesses. It features semiprivate rooms and employs nearly 1,000 staff members. In addition, Tacachale accommodates men who have autism spectrum disorders and those remanded by the courts to forensic programs.
