History
On November 27, 2012, the branch moves to its new location on Echo Ave. The original Piedmont Avenue Branch was established in 1912 at 3975 Piedmont Avenue, near the present Wells Fargo Bank. In November of 1931, the Library Board sought approval from the City Council to enter into an agreement with S.M. Greenwood to build the present branch at 160 41st Street. Oakland architects Miller and Warnecke designed the building and the new library opened to the public on March 8, 1932. In the mid-70s, a savings and loan company gained ownership of the building; the City of Oakland leased the branch from Citibank for several years. The property is now leased from a private owner. Still in the same location, Piedmont Avenue Branch is one of the two smallest Oakland Public branch libraries and is the fourth busiest branch in the system.
