The Los Angeles Police Department is one of the largest and most innovative law enforcement agencies in the world. It is responsible for providing police service to an area encompassing 467 square miles and 18 community areas, representing nearly 4 million residents. A Board of Police Commissioners oversees all operations of the LAPD. Established in 1869, the mission of the department is to safeguard the lives and property of the people it serves, reduce the incidence and fear of crime and enhance public safety while working with the diverse communities to improve their quality of life. The Northeast Community Police Station is under the jurisdiction of the department s central bureau. It serves the communities of Atwater, Cypress Park, Eagle Rock, East Hollywood, Echo Park, Elysian Park, Elysian Valley, Glassell Park, Griffith Park, Highland Park, Los Feliz, Mount Washington and Silverlake, Calif. The northeast area is nearly 30 square miles and has a population of about 250,000 people.
