Low quality gold and silver were discovered in this area in 1885 and prospectors began staking their claims. This small town that reached a population of about 200 residents was deserted in the spring of 1907 after a huge avalanche that winter swept through Kirwin and killed 3 people. Many only took what they could carry and left their belongings behind in the haste to leave. Many of the buildings and equipment are still there today. Amelia Earhart also visited the area in 1934 and fell in love. You can see the construction that was started on her dream home, but terminated after her disappearance in 1937.
