The School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) began in Bavaria, Germany in 1833 and has expanded into an international community of women who are helping to change the lives of those in need. Their North American Motherhouse is located on Watertown Plank Road in Elm Grove and is the oldest of six SSND Provinces in North America, established in 1850. Approximately 40% of the Milwaukee SSND sisters are involved in education, teaching in a number of local schools including Notre Dame Middle School and Mount Mary College. Sisters also minister in neighborhood parishes and prisons as pastoral ministers or work as social workers.
