The Housing Authority City of Milwaukee was chartered in 1944 and is responsible for the construction, management and provision of safe and affordable housing with services that enhance residents' self-sufficiency. The authority operates a federally funded Section 8 Program, which is designed to help low- and moderate-income families with the renting of privately owned housing facilities. It manages more than 4,400 units of low-income housing that are subsidized by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and administers over 5,280 Section 8 vouchers. The housing authority also owns and manages more than 960 units of affordable housing and over 60 units of market-rate rental housing. It issues and renews rent assistance certificates and vouchers. The Housing Authority City of Milwaukee additionally inspects privately owned housing units for rent assistance contracts. It provides scholarships to adults who have been pursuing postsecondary education. The authority is located in Milwaukee.
