MGE Energy is an investor-owned public utility holding company, which subsidiaries include MGE Power, MGE Power West, MGE Construct, Central Wisconsin Development Corporation and MAGAEL. Its principal subsidiary, Madison Gas and Electric Company, provides natural gas and electric service in south-central and western Wisconsin. It is a regulated utility that generates and distributes electricity to nearly 134,000 customers in Dane County, Wis. The utility also purchases and distributes natural gas to nearly 133,000 customers in seven counties in south-central and western Wisconsin. Madison Gas and Electric has acquired several utility companies, including Viroqua Gas, Elroy Gas and Prairie du Chien Gas. In 2004, the company s assets totaled more than $827 million. MGE Energy, founded in 1896, is headquartered in Madison, Wis.
