When the Door County Advocate began publication on March 22, 1862, every letter had to be set by hand. Now the newspaper has a presence on the Internet and the same computers that set news for the paper are telling the cyber world what Wisconsin s Door Peninsula is all about. Wisconsin's Door Peninsula projects northeasterly into Lake Michigan nearly 80 miles from the northeastern corner of Wisconsin. Washington Island lies off the tip of the peninsula. The county contains nearly 478 square miles with some 250 miles of shoreline. Joseph Harris founded the Advocate, one of Wisconsin s largest semi-weekly magazines. Originally a weekly, it started with 104 subscribers and now has subscriptions for more than 12,000. In 1955, Chan Harris, great grandson of Joseph, started the Advocate s Resorter Reporter section. At first printed only in summer, it is now a year-round publication. The Door County Advocate is published in Sturgeon Bay, Wis.
