HistorySince Washington Island is a Scandinavian community and one of the oldest lcelandic settlements the name Kaupstadur comes from Iceland. That means market place or buying place. Every town in Iceland has one. Sixty years ago when we opened, Items from Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland along with Washington lsland and Door County items were sold. Books, cards linens, wearables, glassware, toys, and products of local artists are the base of products offered. A warm welcome with good conversation abounds. The Museum Room returned for this Anniversary year. A seal skin covered trunk brought from Iceland in the 1870's, two chairs made by Thorstein Veblen for his Island home, and the sign Adalbol from the building the original Icelanders coming to the lsland lived in are a part of the collection in the museum. Kari Anderson prints, cards, posters, and fused glass art are featured. Siry, my kind and loving lab/shepherd mix greets folks as they enter.
