Established in 1982, the Center for Limnology is a multidisciplinary facility that plans, conducts and facilitates inland freshwater research. The center operates Hasler Laboratory for Limnology, which provides office space for various projects. It research-based projects include synthesis, modeling and long-term studies. The Center for Limnology also maintains UW Trout Lake Station, which provides access to more than 2,500 lakes in the Northern Highland Lake District. UW Trout Lake Station serves as a field for the North Temperate Lakes Long Term Ecological Research Project. It is located within the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which conducts classes in ecosystems analysis and the ecology of fishes.
