BloodCenter of Wisconsin, founded by the Milwaukee Junior League in 1947, is a nonprofit community-based blood bank. The organization has grown to more than 750 employees and focuses on blood collection, testing, treatment and research. The center provides blood products and medical expertise to patients. It is staffed by health care professionals and scientists who collect and test blood in order to provide a safe supply to community hospitals and conduct diagnostic tests on blood and other components. Its physicians provide direct medical care and treatment to those needing specific transfusion services. The researchers at the center study the role of blood components in disease and advance cures. Some of the specialized tests performed by BloodCenter include matching potential organ donors and recipients, detecting risk factors for cancer and heart disease and identifying various bleeding and clotting disorders. BloodCenter is one of the four blood centers in the world with a significant blood research program. BloodCenter of Wisconsin is headquartered in Milwaukee.
