Incorporated in 1779, City of Alexandria, Va., is governed by a city council comprising a mayor and six council members who are elected for three-year terms. The city operates various departments, such as business and economy, environment and nature, government, human rights and services, planning and zoning, schools and libraries, transportation, and real estate services.
