WVVA is the NBC local television affiliate that provides news, programming, entertainment and information to residents of the greater Bluefield, Va., area. The station, which broadcasts on channel six, began operations in 1955 under the call letters WHIS. In 1979, WHIS was sold to Quincy Newspapers and became WVVA. The call letters were chosen to create a bond between the West Virginia and Virginia viewers of Channel 6. WVVA remains one of the strongest NBC affiliates in the United States and continually averages 40+ shares in the 10 county Bluefield-Oak Hill, Va., market.
