The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has an air monitoring section, which monitors air pollutants on periodic basis and also collects meteorological data to analyze particulate fallout. Its compliance and enforcement section consists of four areas, including chemical operations, materials handling, combustion and asbestos. The section handles citizen complaints involving dust, fallout, odor problems and open burning. The department s hazardous waste section regulates air emissions from facilities that treat, store and dispose of solid and hazardous waste. In addition, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has a laboratory that analyzes filters from various sampling sites throughout the state to determine the amount of particulate matter in the air. The laboratory also performs a weekly analysis of precipitation samples for conductivity and acidity concentrations. The department is located in Charleston, W.Va.
