Four Rivers Transportation Inc., acquired the Appalachian and Ohio Railroad Inc., (AO) from Watco Transportation Services Inc. The railroad is a privately held corporation and subsidiary of Four Rivers Transportation, Inc., a Delaware Corporation. It operates 158 miles of rail line, between Grafton and Cowen, W Va. Appalachian and Ohio Railroad Inc. primarily transports coal from the several mines it serves. Other freight includes logs, lumber, and chemicals. It interchanges with the CSXT (a class I Railroad owned with the CSX Transportation) at Grafton in West Virginia. The railroad also connects with three short line railroads: the Beech Mountain Railroad (BEEM) at Alexander, W. Va ; the Elk River Railroad (ELKR) at Burnsville Junction, W. Va; and the West Virginia Central Railroad (WVC) at Tygart Junction, W. Va.
