WSDOT, also known as the Washington State Department of Transportation, is a cabinet agency that maintains more than 7,000 miles of highways and over 3,000 bridges and tunnels. Based in Olympia, Wash., it also operates one of the state's most popular tourist attractions, the Washington State Ferries, which has more than 25 boats and carries over 27 million passengers. It provides bus and other transit services with the help of local transit agencies. The department also runs more than 25 freight railroad cars that carry grain in eastern Washington and operates over 15 emergency airfields. WSDOT has a partnership with Amtrak and provides the Amtrak Cascades passenger rail service that connects Seattle and other western Washington cities in Portland, Ore.
