Spanaway Junior High enrolls more than 800 students in grades seven through nine. It operates several educational departments, such as communication arts, humanities, reading, life and earth science, and health and physical education. The school additionally offers programs in American social studies, Washington State history, mathematics, industrial arts, Spanish, vocal music, and family and consumer science. Spanaway Junior High supports band and orchestra clubs. Its athletics department offers a variety of sports activities, including baseball, basketball, football, cross country, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, and track and field. The school has a library that offers the Battle of the Books program, which encourages reading and competitions where students answer questions about plots, settings and characters from books. Spanaway Junior High is located in Tacoma, Wash., and is a part of the Bethel School District.
