Founded in 1865, The Salvation Army is a faith-based nonprofit organization. It provides disaster relief, AIDS education and residential services. The organization operates day care centers, medical facilities and summer camps. The Salvation Army additionally provides family and career counseling, vocational training and substance abuse rehabilitation services, as well as shelters for battered women and children. Its membership consists of more than 3,500 officers, over 60,000 employees, nearly 113,000 soldiers, approximately 430,000 adherents and more than 3.5 million volunteers. The Salvation Army's transitional housing program offers interim housing and case management to homeless families. In addition, it operates a community center that features a gymnasium and indoor swimming pool for people with disabilities. The organization maintains a location in Spokane, Wash.
