History
The RSF rhododendron collection was first housed in Oregon. A committee met with George Weyerhaeuser, who was immediately and enthusiastically receptive to the idea of providing space on the new Weyerhaeuser corporate campus in Federal Way, Washington. In 1974 the Weyerhaeuser Company generously leased, at no cost, a permanent site of 24 acres for the collection. In addition to generous patronage by George Weyerhaeuser, virtually all of the professional and lay Rhododendron experts from all over the world were heavily involved with the formation and development of the RSBG. All of this highly coordinated cooperation and planning was to ensure that the RSBG would become, and would remain in perpetuity, both a scientific and a cultural representation of one of the iconic plants of the Pacific Northwest.
