Micronesian Market is a family-owned grocery store located in Burien, WA. The store was opened by Johnston Edwin as a way to bring a taste of home to his wife, Tulpe, who was homesick for the special foods from their home island in Kosrae, Micronesia. The market offers a variety of food staples from Micronesia, including canned fish, rice crackers, corned beef, and breadfruit.
Johnston and Tulpe Edwin, both born and raised in Kosrae, moved to the United States in 1988 for college. After facing financial hardships, Johnston worked on an Alaskan commercial fishing boat before reuniting with Tulpe in Texas and deciding to get married. In 2010, instead of using their savings to go back to their home island, Johnston surprised Tulpe by opening Micronesian Market in Vancouver, Washington. Today, the market continues to serve the Micronesian community in Burien, offering a taste of home for those who miss the flavors of Micronesia.
