The Issaquah Police Department serves a resident population of more than 30,000, although the daytime population is approximately 40,000. It is a community-oriented department with a combined commissioned staff of 50 personnel. The Issaquah Chief of Police is Paul D. Ayers. The city has officers on patrol 24 hours a day. The typical patrol shift consists of one Sergeant and three or four patrol officers. They work a 4-12 Plan which is, 4 - 12 hour shifts, followed by 4 days off. The department also operates the Issaquah Jail, a modern, 62-bed facility. In addition to providing a secure environment for Issaquah inmates, the following cities have contracted to house prisoners in the Issaquah Jail: Bellevue; Clyde Hill; Duvall; Maple Valley; Medina; Mercer Island; North Bend; Redmond; Sammamish; Snoqualmie; Black Diamond; Normandy Park; Bothell; Carnation; Kirkland; Shoreline; Woodinville; Newcastle; and Pacific. Issaquah also contracts with Yakima County Corrections for housing some of Issaquah's long term/special prisoners. The Police Department shares a facility with a number of Issaquah City Departments on Sunset Way just east of Front Street.
