The Washington State Department of Ecology is responsible for the protection, preservation and enhancement of the state's environment. The department provides pollution prevention and cleanup services, as well as supports sustainable communities and natural resources. It coordinates air quality, environmental assessment, and hazardous waste and toxics reduction programs. The Washington State Department of Ecology oversees the Department of Energy's Hanford cleanup activities and regulates mixed wastes at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard complex through its nuclear waste program. The department also provides spill response, watershed planning, technical assistance, and environmental law enforcement and education services. In addition, the Washington State Department of Ecology offers several financial assistance programs to support various environmental management projects.
