History
The Black Ball Line began in 1816 when Captain Charles H. Marshall began his first scheduled transatlantic passenger service, employing a fleet of clipper ships, one of which was commanded by the founder's brother Captain Alexander Marshall. It was Marshall's descendents that began the ferry operations of the Puget Sound Navigation Company that were the predecessors of today's Washington State Ferries and BC Ferries. Today, Black Ball Ferry Line operates the MV Coho between Port Angeles and Victoria with daily, 90 minute crossings. In recent years, onboard amenities have been added to the ship to include a spacious solarium deck, onboard duty free, gift shop and coffee shop. For a complete history, see our web site.
