The Virginia State Police Department is a statewide law enforcement agency that preserves human lives and property, protects public peace and the rights of citizens, prevents crime and disorder, and enforces local, state and federal laws. It is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Virginia State Police Department supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the usage of illegal drugs, gang activities and violent behavior. The agency operates a communication center that maintains a multichannel police system and provides communication services for police, fire and emergency medical assistance. The Virginia State Police Department has been operational for more than 75 years.
