Virginia Natural Gas Company provides natural gas service to more than 264,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in southeastern Virginia. VNG s asset management plan has paid customers nearly $9 million during the past three years. The plan has saved customers an average of $35 each. Virginia Natural Gas' roots go back to 1850 when the City Gas Light Company received a charter to illuminate the streets of Norfolk, Va., with gaslights. Through many consolidations and mergers, the company eventually became part of Virginia Power. In 1982, management separated the two operations and created Virginia Natural Gas as a separate division. In 1986, the history of VNG came full circle when it became a separate subsidiary of the Richmond-based Dominion Resources. In 1990, Consolidated Natural Gas Company acquired VNG from its former parent company. AGL Resources later bought it in 2000. Virginia Natural Gas Company maintains a location in Norfolk, Va.
