The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation is a state agency that is responsible for highways, transportation agencies and aviation and ports. It is comprised of more than 40 employees who work with various public and private partners to provide financial support, project management and program advocacy services. The department operates over 2,000 busses, vans, ferries and rail cars. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation maintains nearly 30 human service transportation agencies that offer critical transportation services for senior citizens. It utilizes a multimodal transportation system and participates in the development of plans to identify transportation improvements in key corridors and regions. The department is located in Richmond, Va.
