Virginia State Police preserves human lives and property, protects public peace and the rights of citizens, prevents crime and disorder and enforces federal laws. It is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Virginia State Police supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the usage of illegal drugs, gang activities and violent behavior. The agency operates a communication center that maintains a multichannel police system and provides communication services for police, fire and emergency medical assistance. Virginia State Police has been operational for more than 75 years and maintains an office location in Appomattox, Va.
