Highlands Educational Literacy Program, Inc. is dedicated to increasing the literacy levels of the adults and children in Washington County. Our mission is to provide educational opportunities for adults to help empower them to function more productively in our largely rural county. We provide free one-on-one tutoring to adults in basic reading and writing,English as a second language, and digital literacy to support job readiness skills. As part of this mission we aspire to increase awareness of literacy-related issues and support parents by encouraging reading and learning for their pre-school and elementary school children. H.E.L.P. was started in July of 1987 under the direction of the WC Public Library. In February of 1999, HELP became an independent nonprofit, organized under the direction of a Board of Directors. In 2007, the Meadowview First Committee offered free office space in the new community building and HELP relocated to Meadowview, Va. Our goal is to reach the low- literacy population, provide support and encouragement, and work towards a community whose residents embrace life long learning and are engaged in the next generation of learners. Our vision is that every person in our community will possess the literacy skills to pursue his/her life goals and to be active participants in building a productive community.
