The Department of Public Utilities is responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of water and wastewater systems of Henrico County, Va. It also administers various solid waste activities, including collection and disposal of refuse, operation of landfills and coordination of recycling programs. The department operates street lighting systems that are supported by a special sanitary district tax levy. The Department of Public Utilities maintains administrative, engineering and business divisions. It also has more than 20 sewage pumping stations and over 1,200 miles of sanitary sewer lines. The department serves nearly 85,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. The Department of Public Utilities additionally operates several public use areas to receive trash and recyclable materials from households, rental properties, vacant lots, businesses and commercial ventures.
