The December 9, 1775 Battle of Great Bridge battlefield site is listed in the Virginia Landmark Register and in the National Register of Historic Places. The Battle of Great Bridge was the first land battle of the Revolutionary War fought in Virginia, and it was the first victory for the Patriots. Visit this historic park and see firsthand where independence began. It is the mission of the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways History Foundation to establish and support the Battlefield Park and (in the near future) Visitor Center, in partnership with public and private agencies in order to preserve, promote and present to the nation the historic, educational, and economic significance of the Battle of Great Bridge, the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal and the Dismal Swamp Canal.
