The Virginia Department of Corrections is a model correctional agency that works to enhance the public safety by programming and supervising sentenced offenders in a humane and cost-efficient manner, consistent with correctional principles and constitutional standards. It oversees the operations of the commonwealth's adult correctional facilities and operates nearly 50 institutions statewide. The Virginia Department of Corrections employs more than 13,000 staff members and provides detention facilities to over 31,000 inmates. The department maintains a victim services unit that offers advocacy on the behalf of crime victims and provides the notification of changes in inmate transfers, release dates, name changes, escapes and captures. The unit also provides victims with ongoing support, crisis intervention, information and referrals. It undertakes several training, education and public awareness initiatives, as well as supports the Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE) program. The Virginia Department of Corrections has been operational for more than 30 years and maintains an office in Fairfax, Va.
