The Virginia Department of Social Services provides welfare services to the citizens of Virginia. The department collaborates with the local departments of social services throughout the state and other local service providers to offer assistance to elderly citizens in need of protection from abuse. It also offers services to adults who require the services of adult care residences and provides care, transportation and nutrition services to adults with disabilities. The department additionally provides financial and energy assistance and food stamp benefits. The Virginia Department of Social Services promotes the development of healthy families and protects children from abuse and neglect with programs, such as Child Protective Services and Domestic Violence Prevention.
