Congress created the National Science Foundation in 1950 as an independent federal agency. In fields such as computer science, mathematics and the social sciences, NSF "[promotes] the progress of science; [advances] the national health, prosperity, and welfare; [secures] the national defense." It has an annual budget of about $6.9 billion.
Visitors are welcome to do research and take of advantage of the many discoveries the NSF has to offer. The NSF is located in the heart of Ballston where many banks, shopping areas are nearby and the metro is within walking distance. Parking is available for $11 a day underneath the NSF building or more inexpensive at the Ballston Common Mall.
