History
Angels of Assisi began in 2001 as a mobile spay/neuter shuttle. It would make scheduled stops twice a month and provide low cost spay/neuter to Roanoke and the surrounding communities. At that time over 8,000 animals were being euthanized each year at the Roanoke pound, and our founder thought this was the best way to combat the problem and reduce euthanasia rates at the local pound. As the organization grew, a building was necessary to keep up with the growing demand for services, so the Angels of Assisi of today was born. Today, Angels of Assisi provides low cost spay/neuter, a low cost wellness, vaccine, and sick clinic, as well as a no-kill adoption center, all at the downtown Roanoke location. Through these services and the community outreach programs Angels of Assisi offers, euthanasia rates at the Roanoke pound have greatly reduced to a little over 1,700 animals euthanized in 2013.
