American Anthropological Association, founded in 1902, is one of the world's largest organizations of individuals interested in anthropology. The association promotes the science of anthropology, stimulates and coordinates the efforts of American anthropologists, and publishes and encourages the publication of matter pertaining to anthropology. Its government relations department works to increase the public understanding of anthropology and promotes the use of anthropological knowledge in policy making. The organization works in coalition with other organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Consortium of Social Science Associations and National Humanities Alliance. American Anthropological Association is a member of the World Council of Anthropological Associations and is headquartered in Arlington, Va.
