Washington Electric Co-op (WEC) was founded in 1939 as a farmers cooperative to provide electric service at cost to its members in East Montpelier and Calais, Vermont. The cooperative borrowed funds from the Federal Rural Electrification Administration to build its initial 55-mile section of power lines and establish a Diesel Generating Plant in East Montpelier.
WEC's loan contract with REA allows for the amortization of its construction loan over 25 years, after which the cooperative will own its power system outright. The cooperative's mission is to extend its electric service into adjoining towns as rapidly as possible, continuing the legacy of bringing electricity to rural areas in Vermont.
